The Missing Link to Achieving Your Potential

Goals, desires, intentions, visions, manifestations, habits – these are all words I am very familiar with as a life coach, but what makes these goals come to life and for your potential to be realised?

I have seen the best-intended goals and new year resolutions carefully written into crisp new diaries and workbooks, only for the commitment to dwindle only weeks or months after they were created.

Why is that?

It is because the goal or intention was created without connecting to the ‘feeling’ you want to experience when you achieve the goal, or even more importantly, while you are striving for the goal! Happiness expert Shaun Anchor says it is the joy we feel striving toward our potential that brings us more happiness rather than the actual achievement of the goal itself.

If you starting to think about what you want to achieve in 2019, look at your list and ask yourself:

1. How do I want to feel while I’m striving for that goal?

2. How do I want to feel when I have achieved it?

The feeling is what motivates you – it’s what gives you inspiration and it’s what fulfils your human needs.

Have you ever achieved something you set your mind to only to find it didn’t fulfil you in the way you thought it would? Maybe it was earning a certain amount of money or getting a promotion at work. That is because it is not achieving goals that makes us happy, it is achieving the desired feelings that makes us happy, as well as enjoying the journey to achievement.

If you aren’t feeling joy, abundance, self-love, success, empowerment or inspiration in yourself once you have achieved your goal then why are you doing it? Too often people suffer through the pain of achieving a goal because they haven’t identified what they want to feel in striving and attaining the goal.

Here’s an example: if you’re aiming to do a marathon the goal is not ‘I will run a marathon in 2019’, it should be “I will run a marathon and love the feeling of my body getting fitter and stronger and slimmer every day (the feeling while striving) and I will feel empowered, proud and invincible (or whatever it is for you) when I have completed it”.

So, if you want to feel more inspired and increase your likelihood of achieving your dreams and your full potential, then connect with the desired feeling every day. If it doesn’t feel good, maybe it is time to adjust the goal.
